How the Math Works

This calculator adds up every recurring cost of RV ownership into a single monthly total:

  1. Loan payment - your monthly financing cost (enter 0 for a paid-off or cash-purchased RV).
  2. Insurance - pre-filled with benchmark pricing from Progressive based on your RV type and coverage level. Adjust to match your actual quote.
  3. Storage - defaults by storage type. At-home storage is free if your HOA and local ordinances allow it.
  4. Maintenance reserve - set at 1% of RV value per year, divided by 12. This covers routine maintenance, unexpected repairs, and tire replacement.
  5. Campground fees - your average nights per month multiplied by the average nightly rate.

The total is simply the sum of all five categories. There are no hidden formulas - the value is in seeing every cost side by side.

What Drives Each Cost

Insurance

RV insurance premiums vary widely by vehicle type. A Class A motorhome is essentially a large vehicle with a house built in, so premiums are closer to auto insurance for a luxury car. A pop-up folding trailer, on the other hand, has minimal value and low theft risk, so premiums are a fraction of the cost. Coverage level matters too: liability-only covers damage you cause to others, while full coverage adds comprehensive and collision protection for your own RV.

Storage

If you can park at home, storage is free. But many homeowners' associations and city ordinances prohibit street or driveway storage of RVs. In that case, outdoor uncovered lots are the budget option at around $50/month, covered storage adds weather protection for about $100/month, and indoor facilities offer the best protection at $200/month or more. Costs are higher near major metro areas.

Maintenance

The 1% rule is a starting point. RVs need roof inspections and sealant checks, water heater and furnace servicing, tire replacement, brake work, and generator maintenance (if equipped). Older RVs or diesel pushers tend to need more. Setting aside a monthly reserve prevents surprise repair bills from derailing your budget.

Campground Fees

Average campground rates vary from $20-$30/night for basic public campgrounds to $50-$80/night for private resorts with full hookups. Boondocking (free dispersed camping on public land) brings this to zero for those trips. Your average depends on how often you camp and what kind of sites you prefer.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Weekend Warrior with a Travel Trailer

  • Loan Payment: $350/mo
  • RV Type: Travel Trailer, $35,000 value
  • Insurance: Standard coverage - $60/mo
  • Storage: At home - $0/mo
  • Maintenance: ~$29/mo (1% of $35k/yr)
  • Camping: 4 nights/mo at $40/night - $160/mo

Total monthly cost: about $599/mo. The loan payment is 58% of the total, but campground fees and insurance add nearly $250 on top. Dropping to 2 nights/month would save $80.

Example 2: Full-Timer in a Class A

  • Loan Payment: $650/mo
  • RV Type: Class A Motorhome, $120,000 value
  • Insurance: Full coverage - $250/mo
  • Storage: N/A (living in it) - $0/mo
  • Maintenance: ~$100/mo (1% of $120k/yr)
  • Camping: 30 nights/mo at $35/night - $1,050/mo

Total monthly cost: about $2,050/mo. For full-timers, campground fees often exceed the loan payment. Many offset this with monthly park rates, memberships like Thousand Trails, or workamping arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does RV insurance cost per month?

RV insurance ranges from about $15-$250 per month depending on the RV type and coverage level. A travel trailer with standard coverage runs around $60/month, while a Class A motorhome with full coverage can cost $250/month or more. Factors like your driving record, location, and the RV's value also affect your premium.

What is the true monthly cost of owning an RV?

The true monthly cost goes well beyond the loan payment. Most RV owners spend $200-$800 per month on top of their loan payment for insurance, storage, maintenance reserves, and campground fees. A $45,000 travel trailer with a $350/month loan payment might actually cost $550-$700/month when you factor in everything.

Do I need full coverage insurance on my RV?

If you are financing your RV, your lender will almost certainly require comprehensive and collision coverage. If you own the RV outright, liability-only is the legal minimum in most states, but full coverage protects your investment against theft, weather damage, and accidents.

How much should I budget for RV maintenance?

A common rule of thumb is 1% of the RV's value per year for maintenance and repairs. For a $45,000 RV, that is about $450 per year or $37.50 per month. Older RVs or those with more complex systems like diesel pushers may need a larger reserve.

Is RV storage expensive?

RV storage costs vary by type and location. Storing at home is free if you have the space and local ordinances allow it. Outdoor uncovered lots average around $50/month, covered spots run about $100/month, and indoor climate-controlled storage can cost $200/month or more in urban areas.
